The rise of
vector-borne disease such as West Nile Virus has again alerted the
public to the need for effective mosquito control and mosquito
treatment programs. Mosquitoes are likely responsible for more
deaths
than any other single cause outside of the giant asteroid.
They are
the only known carriers of the disease agents causing malaria, yellow
fever, dengue, and several types of encephalitis. All of those
diseases have been common in the southeastern United States in the
past, however, extensive mosquito control programs have eliminated all,
except for occasional outbreaks of encephalitis.
Outside of disease,
mosquitos are also a public nuisance for the way
they harrass adults and children. Many outdoor recreational areas
become unusable during mosquito season. While there are many
different
types of mosquitos, only a few are pests to man and require a treatment
program. These few species of
mosquitos which require control programs do more than their fair share
of pestering people.
